John F. Erkkinen, MD
Dr. Erkkinen is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He graduated cum laude from Bowdoin College and also received a bachelor of medical science degree from Dartmouth Medical School. Dr. Erkkinen received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and following his medical internship served two years with the United States Army as a captain in the Medical Corps. He completed his residency and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Dartmouth Affiliated Hospitals. Dr. Erkkinen is a clinical instructor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He is the author or co-author of several publications. Dr. Erkkinen is a member of the Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital Medical Staffs. |

Douglas A. Howell, MD
Dr. Howell is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He graduated from Rutgers University and Temple University School of Medicine, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Howell served his residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where he also completed a fellowship in gastroenterology. Dr. Howell is an associate clinical professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and a member of the Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital Medical Staffs. He is director of the Pancreaticobiliary Center at Maine Medical Center and serves as Maine Medical Center’s director of its Advanced Interventional Endoscopy Fellowship.
Dr. Howell’s numerous professional positions include past acting chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, chief of interventional endoscopy at Maine Medical Center and president of the New England Endoscopy Society. He is currently a member of the Olympus America, Inc. National Advisory Panel, committee member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and editorial review board member of the Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
Dr. Howell has served as principal investigator of numerous scientific studies and currently heads an international clinical research group studying new techniques and equipment for endoscopic therapy. He has served visiting professorships to faculties in the United States and worldwide, including Europe, Australia, Mexico, Canada, Asia and India. He has received multiple recognitions including the Davis Foundation Grant Award, Maine Medical Center Master Teacher Award, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Scholarship Award, New England Endoscopy Society Original Research Award and Maine Medical Association’s Young Doctor of the Year Award.
In 2002, Dr. Howell received the ASGE’s Master Endoscopist Award at the Combined Society Gastroenterology meeting in San Francisco, California, an award given to one gastroenterologist annually among nearly 10,000 members worldwide. His medical publications include many peer-reviewed original articles, book chapters and on-line contributions. |

Alan E. Kilby, MD
Dr. Kilby is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He graduated from Cornell University, and from Cornell University Medical College where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his residency at University of Michigan Hospitals and subsequently served as a fellow in gastroenterology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Dr. Kilby is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Vermont. In addition to his clinical practice in gastrointestinal and liver diseases, he is medical director for hepatitis at Maine Medical Center’s Virology Treatment Center. For his work there, he received a 2004 Special Care Quality Award. Dr. Kilby serves as president of the Maine Gastroenterology Society. He is a member of the Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital medical staffs. |

Thalia Mayes, MD
Board-certified in internal medicine, Dr. Mayes is the first female gastroenterologist to serve the Portland area. Originally from Central America, her family settled in Maine in her youth, and she graduated from Yarmouth High School. She was a Rochester Early Medical Scholar (REMS), chosen for this highly selective eight-year BA/BS-MD program at the University of Rochester in New York. After completing a degree in mathematics, she received her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. She completed her residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York. In addition to performing traditional upper endoscopies and colonoscopies, she has expertise in endoscopic ultrasound. During her training, Dr. Mayes received the Marvin J. Hoffman Award in Clinical Research and the Raphael Dolin Resident Research Award. She is board-eligible in gastroenterology. Dr. Mayes is a member of the Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital Medical Staffs. |

G. Alex Millspaugh, MD
Dr. Millspaugh is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He graduated from Princeton University and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and served a fellowship in the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Millspaugh was the recipient of a Rosenbluth Foundation Grant. Dr. Millspaugh is a clinical instructor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He is a member of the Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital Medical Staffs. |

James H. Morse, MD
Dr. Morse graduated cum laude from Harvard University and subsequently served a Shaw Fellowship at Harvard. He graduated from Tufts School of Medicine and served a Kellogg Fellowship at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Morse completed his residency at the University of Virginia Hospital and a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Before joining Portland Gastroenterology Center, he was a member of the academic faculty of the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center, where he developed special expertise in nutritional deficiencies as well as the delivery of enteral and parenteral nutrition. Dr. Morse is a clinical instructor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and is the author of numerous publications. Dr. Morse’s extensive scientific activities include Crohn’s disease studies, colorectal cancer investigation and gastroenterological drug studies. He is a member of the Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital Medical Staffs and currently acts as medical director of a regional home health care company. |

Benjamin B. Potter, MD
Dr. Potter is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He graduated from Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School. He was the recipient of the Lenna W. Perry Foundation Scholarship, a four-year, full-tuition scholarship awarded annually to a New Hampshire medical student. He completed his internal medicine residency at Maine Medical Center and his gastroenterology fellowship at the Lahey Clinic. Dr. Potter is a clinical instructor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Before joining Portland Gastroenterology Center, Dr. Potter practiced at Gastroenterology Associates of Eastern Maine. He is a member of the Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital Medical Staffs. |

Michael A. Roy, MD
Dr. Roy has practiced gastroenterology in Portland since 1987 and is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He graduated cum laude with a B.A. degree in chemistry from the University of New Hampshire where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine and then completed an internship in internal medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston. This was followed by a residency in internal medicine at Maine Medical Center. After practicing in a physician-shortage area for two years in the National Health Service Corps, Dr. Roy then completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center where he served as chief fellow in his final year. His mentor at the Lahey Clinic was Dr. F. Warren Nugent, an internationally recognized authority on inflammatory bowel disease.
Currently, he is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and serves as division director of gastroenterology at Maine Medical Center. He has held a number of other leadership positions at Maine Medical Center including chairman of the Endoscopic Services Committee and co-director of the Maine Digestive Health Center. In 2006, he was appointed to the Maine Medical Center Board of Trustees.
In 1992, Dr. Roy was recognized for his service to the Portland chapter of the CCFA and has maintained a special interest in the care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. He is an author or co-author of numerous peer-reviewed publications and has served as a reviewer for the journals Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the American Journal of Gastroenterology. Dr. Roy is a member of both the Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital medical staffs.

Andreas M. Stefan, MD
Dr. Stefan is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He graduated summa cum laude from St. Olaf College and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he was awarded a four-year scholarship. In medical school, Dr. Stefan received the Richard C. Horns Award for clinical excellence and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his residency at Harvard University’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and served a fellowship in gastroenterology at Boston University Medical Center. Dr. Stefan completed a program in clinical effectiveness at Harvard School of Public Health and went on to finish an additional year of training in advanced therapeutic endoscopy and ERCP at The Wellesley Hospital and the University of Toronto Medical School. Dr. Stefan is associate director of the Pancreaticobiliary Center at Maine Medical Center. Prior to joining the Portland Gastroenterology Center, he was in practice in Portland, Oregon in the Division of Gastroenterology at The Oregon Clinic. Dr. Stefan is a clinical instructor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and is the author or co-author of numerous publications. He is a member of the Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital Medical Staffs and was recently given an outstanding teaching award by the Maine Medical Center internal medicine residents. In his free time, he enjoys cycling and cross-country skiing. |

Cynthia I. Bartlett, FNP
Cindy Bartlett is a family nurse practitioner certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the Maine State Board of Nursing. A Maine native, she has a bachelor of science degree in nursing as well as a master’s degree, both from the University of Southern Maine. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the Maine Nurse Practitioner Association. Her medical privileges include Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital and New England Rehabilitation Hospital. |

Susan J. Sullivan, MSN, FNP-C
Susan Sullivan is a board-certified family nurse practitioner. She received a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Westbrook College, and then attended Georgetown University where she completed a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program. Susan holds a master of science degree in nursing from the University of Southern Maine. She has been practicing as a nurse practitioner in Maine since 1994, and is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, Maine Gastroenterology Association and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Her medical staff memberships include Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, and New England Rehabilitation Center. |
